Blackthorn is a large, deciduous shrub, which grows to 5 metres tall and features blackish bark and dense, stiff, spiny branches.

Blackthorn is a large, deciduous and hardy shrub. Its woody thorns and thick brambles make it ideal for hedgegrow. Its leaves are oval and broad with a serrated margin. Blackthorn grow well in partial shade or full sun. They can grow in light, medium or heavy soils though they prefer it to be moist but well-drainined. The blackthorn produces dark purple, velvety-looking berries at the beginning of autumn. These berries are called sloe berries and can be used as flavouring for sloe gin. Under the GLAS Scheme you can plant up to 200m of new hedgegrow to qualify for up to €5 per metre for 5
