A Natural Ground Cover

by Malachy - Horticulturist CountryLife Dungarvan | Oct 25, 2017
A natural ground cover

Gaultheria procumbens ‘Big Berry’ (Gaultheria also known as Teaberry) is an evergreen ground cover that is an extremely hardy plant and will thrive in either sun or partial shade.

Gaultheria ‘Big Berry’ is currently on offer in CountryLife, 2 for €12.

It still has its bell shaped whit/pink flowers remaining alongside the ripening berries but these too will eventually turn to the fruity scarlet berries and will stay on show until March.

The berries are edible and also the round leathery leaves are aromatic when crushed and can be used to brew a tea. These green leaves are also a source of an essential oil that has pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties. It smells somewhat like mint and is included in massage oils used for back pain and arthritis.
