by User Not Found | Mar 12, 2015

Fun gardening projects for kidsInvolving children in fun gardening activities provides a valuable opportunity to get them out and about in the fresh air while helping to instill a love of nature in your little ones. In the spirit of Mother’s Day we have put together some fun and easy projects for you.

Gardening ideas for the kids

1. Grow an Egg Head

These are lots of fun, for both you and the kids.

You will need:

  • Eggs
  • Cotton Wool
  • Cress or Lawn Seeds
  • Markers
  • Imagination

 What to do:

Boil your eggs & allow them to cool enough to handle

  1. Cut the top off (about 1/3) and dispose of the egg
  2. Allow the shell to cool completely
  3. Rinse out the eggshell and leave it to dry, it will be strudy, but fragile so please be careful
  4. Fill the eggs with damp cotton wool
  5. Sprinkle the surface with cress or lawn seeds
  6. Gently push the seeds into the cotton wool
  7. Now the fun part! Draw your funny face onto the egg – remember to be careful!
  8. Place the eggs back into the eggbox and place on a warm, light windowsill.
  9. Keep the cotton wool slightly damp & the seeds should start to sprout in about a week

P.S – this one also works with empty toilet role tubes.

2. Create a Bird Feeder

Attracting birds to your garden is a great way to keep away harmful crepp crawlies at bay. This is a great project for kids it so simple!

You will need:

  • Empty Toilet Paper / Kitchen Towel Roll
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bird Seed
  • Twine

What to do:

Cover your empty roll in peanut better – generously

  1. Roll it in the bird seed, apply a little pressure to make sure the seed sticks to the peanut butter
  2. Thread the twine trough the roll and hand it from a tree, you can place the roll onto a branch if you’d like too

3. Vegetable Garden Markers

Do you grow your veg garden from seed, well then these are just what you need!

You will need:

  • Stones
  • Paint

What to do:

This one is super easy – simply paint your master piece onto the stones and when they are dry pop them in around your garden

4. Vegetable Defender

Now you know what all your vegetables are – you best protect them from any hungry birds.

You will need:

  • Twine
  • Old CDs
  • Old Cassette/Video Tapes

 What to do:

Tread the twine through the centre of the cd and secure with a knot

  1. Pull the tape from the inside of you old cassette/video tapes and cut it into sections
  2. Hang the tape from the CD, you can glue it or loop it through the centre of the CD
  3. Hang the decorated CDs around your vegetable patch – the noise and movement will keep the birds away and they also look really pretty.
